Lightspeed ahead ⚡️ – 4G/5G now the biggest connector for IoT

2G & 3G has been passed as number one according to Ericsson Mobility Report. 5G predicted to account for nearly half of all mobile subscriptions by the end of 2027

The Ericsson Mobility Report for 2021 is out
– focusing this year on key trends and events that have shaped the last decade of mobility. Perhaps most interesting of all for lift companies and lift owners is the fact that the number of 4G/5G connected IoT solutions has passed that of 2G/3G – showing a clear shift in the industry towards more future-proof connections.

"The surprise to me is the number of users that has not realised how close we are to a shutdown of the 2G and 3G networks"

According to the report, in only ten years of time, the number of 4G subscriptions has risen from nine million to an astounding 4,7 billion, and cellular connections for IoT are projected to be over 40% by the end of 2027 – with a majority being connected by 4G. This is both very expected and a surprise at the same time according to SafeLine’s Customer Service Director Johan Öhrn:

– These numbers come as no surprise. The sales of 4G VoLTE for our lift telephones and modules have gone up with over 200% the latest year, while regular GSM is on a steady decline as 2G and 3G coverage is going down across Europe.

As the 4G and 5G networks rapidly grow all over the world, the frequency bands of the 2G and 3G networks are being taken over for new technology. Resulting in inevitable shutdowns of the old networks in the years to come.

– The surprise to me is the number of users that has not realised how close we are to a shutdown of the 2G and 3G networks, focusing too much on the initial pricing of the products instead of what they actually bring to the table – a product that functions, says Johan Öhrn.

"SafeLine has invested in the right kind of technology. Thanks to this, we stand ready to deliver the solutions the market is now realising it needs."

Looking through the numbers of different regions across the world, 4G and 5G are dominating the mobile subscriptions, with over 84% being mobile broadband subscriptions.

SafeLine has spent years of development time in modernising the product range with a 4G VoLTE supply, capable of taking on the new networks voice calling over the 4G network.

Johan Öhrn is confident that SafeLine have the capacity of meeting the challenges posed by these developments.

– The greatest takeaway from this for both us and our customers, as I see it, is that SafeLine has invested in the right kind of technology. Thanks to this, we stand ready to deliver the solutions the market is now realising it needs.
